In the Company of My Sisters

A pile of books sits next to a coffee cup on a desk

On today, the last day of National Poetry Month, I thought I'd share one of my poems with you. Now be gentle, because I'm an artist and I'm....well you know the rest (smile):

“In the Company of my Sisters”

In the company of my sisters

I have found the space to be me:

To laugh fully from my belly, to weep soundly from the depths of my soul,

and to cherish each moment--

All in the company of my sisters.

Each a beautiful promise, pregnant with hope.

In the company of my mothers—

Women whose legacy I own—

And, my aunties…

Those whose leathered faces shine with the spirit of perseverance…

Whose very existence smirks in the face of those who would have been sent to destroy us…

In the company of those whose fragile limbs support the weight of an entire people…

Whose spirit is worn on their lips…

Those whose contentment is my single focus…

Those whose words prick the fabric of our collective soul…

Those whose lives are living testament to the Creator’s grace and mercy…

Those recognize that God is not always a He.

In the company of those whose rhythmic syllables move the foundation of civilization…

Those whose mystery is the source of strength…

Those who have been created in the form of The Original Perfect Womb…

Those whose patient, sometimes difficult, but ever forward trod has beaten the path…

Those whose shoulders support the heads of my tired sistas…

In the company of those whose pots cook more than food…

Those who are mothers not only because of giving birth but because of giving love…

In the company of those whose stories have written upon the universe our story---

I find peace.
